I am guilty of it too, trust me…and what drives most of us to continue the mundane cycle is that we all have bills, no time to spare or just β€œokay” with the everyday as long as we have a roof over our heads and food to eat. If you are one of those β€œokay” people and you are happy as can be doing what you do β€” then this blog post isn’t for you. This one is for the ones who have those β€˜out there’ goals…you know the ones that make you think β€œdamn am I dreaming to big” or make you feel like you are going to throw up at the thought of actually accomplishing something that fucking EPIC. I freak out at least 4 times a week or doubt myself when I start to think about opening up my coffee shop one day. BUT here’s the thing, there are so many normal people, just like you and me β€” that own their own businesses, are their own bosses, and make their own schedule.

If you are a creative like myself then you know that when that spark of creativity presents itself; you grab it and ride that wave as long as you can. There are a couple of things that I do when the spark hits me, or I want to light that sucker up myself. If I don’t then the procrastination gets the best of me, and I just sit on whatever ideas I have. Doubting myself and my ability to really get shit done.

Writing out short and long term goals for yourself is a MAJOR KEY (I know you read that in DJ Khaled’s voice) moment. How are you supposed to reach your goals if you don’t write them out. I have a notebook for this, it’s like a mind dump place where I can scribble out ideas and things I want to accomplish. If this isn’t tangible I grab my phone. The notes section of my iPhone is filled with everything from ideas to random one liners that pop in my head. I even have my entire second book written out in the notes section, and it’s just sitting there because I have YET to do anything with it.

The more you see your goals in front of you the more likely you are to have that little voice inside your head pushing you to stay inspired to pursue them. After you write them out, find areas of your life where you can factor in time to work on them, which leads right into my next point…

We can create an excuse for anything, if this was an actual career field I am pretty sure we would have way more millionaires in this life time. I make excuses for things all the time, and yet I find myself binge watching every single show on Netflix and asking people on social media for new recommendations. The truth is that we HAVE time, we just don’t make certain things a priority, and that’s a fact that some of us…including myself. One of my favorite things to do when I really need to get something done is set a 60 minute timer, put my phone on do not disturb and listen to some Sabrina Claudio.

The amount of shit I get done in that hour time frame is insane. I learned this trick from Jen Sincero’s book β€˜You Are A Bad Ass’ (- if you know me you know how much I LOVE ME SOME Jen ), our brains only focus in increments of 60 minutes after that our minds wander, we get super distracted, and just shut down. Try this tip and see how you like it, I usually do 3-4 sessions of this with 15 minute breaks in between and get a whole lot done. Another thing that is way more obvious is using your free time. Instead of re-watching The Office for 8th time in a row on the weekends, or after work use that time to work on your goal. Or instead of going out to party every weekend, schedule out on weekend where you are solely going to focus on taking steps to make your dream happen, or around people who are inspiring and motivating.

This one is tricky and sometimes I have to tweak it according to my goals. For instance…if my goal is to get back into photography and editing there are certain photographers I can and cant follow. Some make me extremely inspired to work harder, learn my style and improve on my editing techniques. While others make me question my ability and want to throw in the towel for good and never pick up a camera again. Why am I like this, I have no idea but there’s a thin line between feeling inspired and insecure…and I know I cant be the only one. Find like minded individuals and groups whether online or in person that are working in fields you want to be in, or are pushing towards something you have had your heart fixated for awhile. Network with them and have genuine conversations and connections. You will be astonished at home many people had the same exact doubts and fears as you before they finally took the leap. Also - being a perfectionist is one of the oldest reasons and excuses as to why you haven’t started taking baby steps towards your goals, talking from experience.

Having a core group of support and inspiration is key to reaching any of your goals. Seeing others succeed and come from a similar background really puts into perspective what you can accomplish. Learn from them, see what worked for them and didn’t, apply those principles and tweak as needed. Sometimes asking for help is the spark of inspiration you need, and usually the hardest step when trying to accomplish anything.

One of my favorite quotes in life is -

β€œYou cant want more for someone than they want for themselves, and you cant help someone, who doesn’t want to be helped”

and this is so true, it is like no matter how much you believe in them and see potential in them, if they are content, and want nothing more for themselves - then you cant do anything about it.

I am bringing this up only to let you know that it doesn’t matter what these tips are, or what anyone else says to you…if you aren’t ready, then you aren’t ready.

And that might be why you aren’t in the position or mindset to reach your goals or see your growth. Only you know when the time is right for you to start working towards what you really want. + when that time comes and you need someone to help you through it, or need any type of advice…then let me know. My knowledge is your knowledge and I got you boo!
